Just a reminder that The Book Group’s Summer Read for September is The Help, by Kathryn Stockett.
Set at the beginning of the Civil Rights Era The Help is the story of Skeeter, young white woman who is just home after college in 1962 Jackson Mississippi—at the dawn of the Civil Rights Era. Skeeter wants to be a writer. She is challenged to write about something that disturbs her safe little world. She decides to learn more about the lives of Abilene and Minnie—“the help†of the title, two black women who are nearly invisible as human beings to the wealthy white families for who they cook, clean and serve as nannies. As the two maids gradually open up to share their stories both they and Skeeter realize that theirs is a story the world needs to hear—but what are the risks and the consequences of coming forward and speaking openly and honestly?
Anyone is welcome to come at any time to The Book Group. We invite all who would like to discuss The Help to come to the September 12 meeting of the Book Group at 7 PM in the Deppich Room.
